Back in November I made my regular Target Card payment and thought little of it until a weeks later a phone call woke me at 8 am. It was a representative from the bank that manages my Target card asking where my payment was. Sleepy and confused I stated I had made the payment but he insisted that there was no record of this. I began to dig out my computer to look up the confirmation number that the online payment system had issued me.

"Oh wait, I see the issue. You paid too early."

"Oh...I ah...."

"Well, I will remove the late fee but I am required to get full payment for November and December right away. You can make that payment over the phone now but I'll have to charge you a fee of 15 dollars."

"But I already paid for November."

"I'm sorry but the system sees it as a payment for the previous month."

There was more but, whatever...

I need to remind you it was early for me. Yes, 8 am is early for me. I was unable to wrap my head around the situation and I caved in far too easy on this whole thing. Later, when I was more coherent I discovered the billing date for the payment began on the 15th. I payed my bill online on the 14th.

Afterward I thought, "Fine, I payed more on the card. This is a good thing". Then I got the next bill.

They reduced my available credit by 1000 dollars and moved up my payment date by two weeks. I called the service center to find out about the changes and spoke to "Bill".

"I see that you were late on a payment, this is why."

"Nooooooo. That was resolved take a closer look."

"Ah yes, so I see. Well this situation will go up for review and on the next bill they will return your credit limit to normal."

Again there was more...

This solution pleased me in no way but I could tell this representative was not about to budge from his script and I just surrendered as the collective hopes one will. I have been watching my bill and I have not been at all surprised to see my limit was not be returned to what it once was. That is until this months bill showed up. They finally raised it......by 100 bucks.

You can solve the problem like we did.

We never carry a balance on a credit card.

And no, we are not rich, just frugal, we save for stuff.

That way the fucking grubbing pricks can't pull shit like that....

That relationship is pretty much over and yes, I'd like to move onto a life of no balances.

I am not frugal, I like toys I don't need. That is changing.

Actually what bites me more about this is I am pretty good about all my payments and these matters. But they found a way to punish and take advantage of me when I was paying ahead of time and being responsible.

This is why we abandoned our love affair with credit cards. They are rigged to keep you in debt and over the last ten years they have continued to lobby Congress to erode your rights so that basically they can fuck you at will.

If you read carefully your agreement, you cannot even sue them, you have to opt for arbitration, which 95% of the time favors....who else, the credit card company.

We just view credit cards as a no win situation. We still have toys, we just pay less for them since we save and buy them with cash, so no interest.

No guilt.
No stress.

Plenty of options in life without all that debt....

BTW, no we did not come to this realization overnight ;) It took a couple of years to position so that they were paid off and we were buying things with cash.

I'm too lazy to look it up now (Fark?), but the press and blogosphere have caught on to these sorts of shenanigans from the credit card companies.
