For the record I'm a big fan of moo mini cards. I just think it's a fun format to play with and if you are clever you can do quite a bit with the cards. I've seen them used as gift tags, labels for clothing, framed individually as tiny art pieces and even to tell dirty stories about superheros...the list goes on. People love the size and in general they seem to go over real well with anyone I've presented them to.
They now have a picture frame to play with.
How fun is that? |

Ok art types. This might be old news but poking around a local art store I found this material....
"GOLDEN Digital Grounds turn just about any relatively flat surface into an ink-jet printable surface, providing the control and freedom to create textures and surfaces at whatever scale and shape desired."

One interesting example I saw on display was an image printed on clear gel medium. |

Portland - Day 4
I was just wandering around the Pearl District for First Thursday. In one section of the down a number of local artists had work on display street fair style.
I was checking out the glass work of Morgan Madison. The work on display was primarily fused glass. Great attention to detail. Crisp look to the work. You can check out his website at www.morganvanmadison.com but I think stuff like this is always better first hand. |

"Near / Far" or "Where Ever I Go, There You Aren't"
I was asked to participate in another show. I guess this show will take place at some new lofts opening up in Royal Oak. The idea is to show of the new spaces and also fill the apartments with works by local artists.
I've haven't been the most productive in personal creative areas as of late. I was struggling with images to give to the gallery for the show. Several months back...ok...back in August I started to do some revisions to an earlier idea. I got the canvas all set up to work on but then lost interest. So, the murky white landscapes waited patiently until I would visit them again.
Yesterday, on the ride home from work, I came up with the idea for the above. (If you right click on the image it will get a bit bigger) It's kind of a part two to a piece I sold a month ago.

"As the Crow Flies" or "Getting From Point A to Point B"
As for the title, well....yes, Grover will come to mind and that's good. It's all part of the story.
The new piece has generated other new simple ideas. Plus I have a ton of bar napkins with doodles and names all over my desk. I never have a lack of ideas, just the drive to get them out into reality. There is a layer to the paintings that is missing and until I figure out how to work on that I find myself dragging my feet. They will happen when they need to.
I have no details on the April 24th show as of yet but I will provide more info when I know more. |

 "Sand Octopus" by David Chung
Speaking of "Autopuss", the above is a sample of work by former CCS student David Chung. Maybe you will enjoy browsing his collection of work at thechung.com. It's diggable stuff. |

| So, yeah... |
[Jan. 10th, 2007|02:11 pm] |

I have been wearing the same pants for three days now. I've been busy...but ok, yeah, too lazy to go to the laundry room and get fresh jeans out of the dryer. Hey, I work in a basement, no one ever sees me. And yes, my underwear is clean.
What's been keeping me busy? Well, I am trying to get organized to fly to San Francisco this week so I have been getting clothes and stuff together. Clean clothes FYI. Steve stopped in on his way to Macworld. I ran him to the airport and he flew out yesterday. Plus I've had this sinus infection to fret over and get checked out. I have also gotten a few calls from the gallery I have been showing my work at.
Did I ever tell you my relationship with that gallery died a few years back? Well it did. It used to be pretty strong. They took good care their artists and kept in touch about opportunities. Then one day the management changed and the self centered ass who took over only cared about a select few (himself). My desire to be involved with the gallery ended. Well, he was ousted a short time and slowly things have changed.
The gallery has called twice now. The first was about two weeks ago. They offered me the opportunity to have some of my work hang in newly constructed rooms at the MGM casino. That was pretty out of the blue. I had to scurry around and get images and a bio together. I hate writing my own bio. Do people really want to know about me? I think the only concern other than dirty clothes is that my format is a bit small.
I still have to hear back on this
Yesterday I got another call. A local marketing agency needs art for a special event held at their headquarters by the 23rd of this month. The work would stay on display for a year.
They needed images and dimensions.....today.
This seems to happen to me a lot. When I get that I need something to happen it does. The other day it hit me I should not take these opportunities so lightly, I best put all I can into getting the info they request together. One day I may not get this attention. Right now I can only give them a stack of pages held together with binder clips. This seems to have pleased the "today" urgency for the moment.
Tonight I will fold up and pack clean clothes and prepare for my trip on Thursday. That is all I can concentrate on at the moment. Escape is good. |

I'm in an art show. I've got a number of paintings around the house only a few friends have seen. I decided it was time to show off some of this stuff and let some of my work go. It seems to have paid off.

I have decided on this next batch of "paintings" the cupcake effect is not desirable. Maybe it's the black paint. It's too tar like. I think I also want to play with a hard edge. Eh, the work can work either way.
 before
after I have also found wood to paint on. I didn't care for the canvas I used in the other one. The texture bleeds through and makes me grumpy.
Canvas texture has offended me for many years. It appears in clay work a lot. There is nothing wrong with it. It's just a texture that I know and I don't like it turning up. Equate it to seeing hot glue on a Louise Nevelson piece. You'd gag.
Canvas is a tool and unless it is there for a reason I do my best to do away with it. Sure I know it gets used but I don't want to see it. |

Hey, I made my first painting.
Ok, It may not be the first time I have painted. I mean, yeah, I painted when I would glaze tiles and stuff. And yeah....I have painted on some wood to do some screening over. But I have never gone out and got canvas and paint and slathered it all around in order to achieve a portrait.
Ok....so yeah I didn't really paint either. I more or less just smeared paint onto a surface with a putty knife and smacked another layer of dried paint on top. But it involved paint. The tube of liquid had the word paint printed on it.
And yeah, yeah, yeah, it's the same crap I have been doing for the past few month but a guy has to start somewhere doesn't he?
Fine...I'll try harder next time. |

 Tile - Melissa Muir Sutherland
The weekend was excellent.
Saturday I made a trip out with concrete Mike, Greg and their two youngest kids to Ann Arbor. Our primary destination was a decorative tile show put on by Pewabic Pottery. The show featured a some close friends in the tile field as well as a few fellow grads from CCS. It was like a little reunion of sorts. It was pretty social with a lot of catching up.
I was giddy walking thought the exhibit. I love all the clay.
I was taken with the work of Melissa Muir Sutherhand. I enjoy her use of bold solid colors. The glaze is smooth and breaks nicely on her simple textures. There is a satiny quality I just want to lick. It was quite different than most of the other tile work usually seen at the show. Her work is very modern where many still follow traditional tile techniques and are quite architectural.
I had to pick up a piece on the spot. Once I got home I decided I needed more. I can't wait to hang it up.
She is working on her web site but visit and check out some of her other tiles. |
